Shannon Smoot

I am a Queer, Non-Binary, Social Justice and Anti-Racist oriented Therapist offering trauma-informed, culturally responsive, and person-centered therapy for individuals and families. I am grounded in an intersectional and mind-body framework, which honors, values, and explores the dynamic relationship between your identities, lived experiences, physiological sensations and any systemic issues/pressures. Through an inclusive, safe and affirming counseling environment, I will support you in working toward radical self-care, joy and healing by building on your strengths and addressing presenting difficulties, often drawing from the past to inform our work. While I come from a more integrative model of therapy, incorporating diverse modalities such as acceptance & commitment therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, mindfulness, family systems, solution focused therapy, and creative therapies, I find it critical to remain flexible and collaborate in tailoring therapy to your specific needs.

Over the last 14 years, I have worked in a variety of educational and community based settings throughout the Bay Area, focusing on mental health, wellness, youth empowerment, juvenile justice, and LGBTQIA+ and Gender Affirming Care. I have been in the Counseling field since 2016 working as a School Counselor for middle and high school students. I have had extensive experience working with diverse youth and families, providing individual/group counseling surrounding anxiety, depression, suicidal ideation, self-harm, eating disorders, ADHD/ADD, familial and relational issues, divorce, grief, gender and sexual identity issues, substance use, body image, and self-esteem. As a former School Counselor, I also have the lens and knowledge surrounding school related issues, peer relationships, and the intersection of school-community supports.

I approach therapy with warmth, compassion, a bit of humor and a deeply held belief that you can experience healing and transformation in life. Therapy is a place for you to take up as much space as you need. A space to carefully explore and unlearn patterns that might not be serving you. A space for you to write and rewrite your story as many times as you need to feel more connected and alive. I am honored to be part of your healing process, your transformation. I see you, I trust you, I’m here to listen to you. I honor you, in all ways, always. Thank you for being here.
